In February 2021 Elanders North Tyneside agreed on a partnership to provide work placements for students at Gateshead College to help gain real-life work experience alongside studies.

Since then we have had Martha join the marketing team once a week as an intern. Martha has astounded us with her positive attitude, willingness to learn and great ideas. She has quickly become an asset to the marketing team, and we are excited about her future with Elanders.

This week whist at Elanders, Martha was awarded the ‘Hugh Smith Brightest Talent’ award by her tutors at Gateshead College.

Joanne Easten, Learner Facilitator from Gateshead College proudly said “Martha was chosen for the award based on her determination and passion she has shown in her college work and especially how she has embraced the work placement opportunity with yourselves to make a difference in her career.”

Hugh Smith was a teacher at Gateshead College from 1977 to his retirement in 2010 – in total, he devoted more than 33 years of his life to educating and inspiring young people. Hugh Smith passed away in 2019, leaving a donation in his will to continue to support our students.
His first job was teaching government and politics at A-Level, he later moved on to become course leader for leisure and tourism. The last part of his career was as a senior lecturer in business and management. He was instrumental in developing training programmes that were very well received by North East companies.

It goes without saying that Hugh dedicated his entire life to developing others and he was a fantastic asset to Gateshead College. His legacy lives on through his determination to support our young people in achieving their dreams.

We’re so proud of Martha for all she has achieved both at Gateshead College and her time at Elanders. Well done!
